How does a counterfeit detector work?

There is a possibility that a counterfeit bill will reach our hands. A great ally for business in these cases are counterfeit detectors. These machines solve, in less than a second, all doubts about the authenticity of cash. But how does a banknote detector work?

What is a banknote detector?

A counterfeit detector is a small electronic device that distinguishes symbols, components, or aspects of a banknote to ensure its authenticity. They are used in shops and establishments around the world, anywhere cash is accepted. The technology of these detectors makes it possible to identify subtle features in banknotes that escape the human eye, as imitations are increasingly sophisticated and difficult to recognize at first sight.

There are two main types of counterfeit detectors: those that only check ultraviolet ink and more complete ones that verify more characteristics, such as the magnetic stripe.

Technology to identify counterfeit banknotes

There are several properties that detectors consider when identifying counterfeit bills:

  • Ultraviolet control: the banknotes are made with ultraviolet (UV) ink. It is a fluorescent phosphor that can only be seen with specific sensors.
  • Magnetic stripe control: banks use ferromagnetic ink of various colors with which they form patterns invisible to the human eye. The detector is able to pick it up.
  • Infrared control: euro banknotes also include another type of ink. Under infrared light, it reacts differently. Some are reflected and shining, while others darken. Both are invisible in daylight.
  • Control by physical aspects: each type of banknote has its own dimension and weight. Detectors can measure these characteristics very accurately.

Banknote counters

While counterfeit detectors offer only this function, there are banknote counters that can also perform this task. Some models, in addition to helping calculate the cash, can warn of the counterfeits that may have been added.
